Bahamian Superstitions

We Bahamians are very superstitious. Because of our strong melting pot culture of African religion and culture, and European folklore, and other foreign beliefs—has made us this way. We can’t deny that even in this day and age, we at times still believe in the beliefs of our forefathers. Here are a few Bahamian superstitions .

-If  the palm of your hand is itchy it means you are going to receive money.

-Throw salt in the fire when you have a bad dream.

-Brush your feet so you won’t bring evil sprits into the house.

-Don’t sleep on your stomach you will be hag in the night

-Throw salt in the four corner of your house for evil spirits.

-Dreaming of fish means someone you know is pregnant.

-Don’t cut a baby boy’s hair until he can talk.

-Throwing you tooth on the roof for the rat to bring it back.

-Dream of fish some one is having a baby.

-Don’t turn on the t.v or talk on the phone when it is thunder and lighting.

-Don’t look in the mirror when it is lighting.

-Put a black string on your baby hand or ankle to keep evil spirits away.

-Never put you bag on the floor, because you will become poor.

Growing up do you remember hearing that the devil and his wife is fighting for potcake when it is raining and the sun is shinning at the same time.
